Research area::

Pharmacology of bioactive products from natural source

Given their medical importance, natural products represent a tremendous source of drug discovery. For centuries, treatment with plants and/or their products was the only resource available to different ethnic groups for the prevention and treatment of many diseases. We pursuit to evaluate the pharmacological potential of natural compounds, co-products, metabolites and their derivatives using a guided pharmacological model. In particular, we are focused in the prevention and treatment of infectious and somatosensory nervous system related diseases derived from the stomatognathic complex. With the specific objective of evaluating products involved in a natural environment, it is an interest to evaluate their mechanisms of action at physiological, molecular and structural levels. The development of bioassay methods, new technologies and innovative products with a therapeutic approach and the use of pharmacologically active molecules from natural products are the focus of this research. Once the biological and toxicological bases of the naturally occurring compounds and/or derivatives are known, safe the therapeutic doses are determined for clinical trials and may be applied in Dentistry.
