Research Area:

Regulation of inflammation and wound healing in the periodontium. Periodontal tissues are permanently exposed to aggressions that include colonization and eventual microbial infection and mechanical damage caused by traumatic or surgical wounds. The reparative response is fundamental to recover the homeostasis and eventual regeneration of the tissue after the damage of these structures. Unfortunately, tissue healing and regeneration does not always occur and very often a deficient reparative response can result in poor wound closure at the epithelial level, an abnormal reconstitution of connective tissue, loss or destruction of bone tissue and maintenance of inflammation. Through multiple studies we have evaluated how different conditions such as smoking, diabetes and ultimately aging can negatively modulate tissue repair in the periodontium. For this we have focused especially on the role played by connective tissue fibroblasts and their differentiation into myofibroblasts. These myofibroblasts play a critical role in the regeneration of tissue through the synthesis of collagen and the organization of a functional extracellular matrix. Our studies point out that deficiencies in the differentiation and / or functionality of these cells are responsible for defects in tissue repair associated with diabetes and / or aging. These studies involve different experimental approaches that include primary cultures of gingival connective tissue cells, pre-clinical models of inflammation and wound repair, and analysis of tissues of human origin.
